The objective of the instance is to have close monitoring of the particular situations that may arise in companies.

The president of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS), María Teresa Vial and the Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Jeannette Jara, met yesterday to talk about the implementation of the 40 Hour Law, which will enforced from Friday April 26.

During the meeting, the business leader informed the Secretary of State the results of a survey carried out among the institution's member companies, showing that 50% have already adapted their working hours in the terms required by the Law, while the other half will do so starting this Friday.

Minister Jeannette Jara and María Teresa Vial agreed to create a support committee for the implementation of the law, in order to closely monitor the particular situations that may arise in individual companies.

In this regard, the Secretary of State maintained that “as a government we are supporting workers and employers for the correct application of the 40 Hour Law and thus be able to provide a better quality of life to people, as is the spirit of the norm. In this sense, I want to value the willingness of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce to closely monitor the particular situations of its associates.”

For her part, the president of the CCS indicated that "although we maintain different interpretations about the application of this law, it is more relevant to work together to ensure its correct implementation."

“We have been working on this issue for more than a year and we agree on the need to establish a table where particular cases can be discussed, in order to avoid confusion and guarantee that the final objective is met: reducing the working day by one hour during this first year and subsequently reach 40 hours per week. Our common purpose is to take care of the work environment, foster trust and guarantee fair treatment for both workers and employers,” added María Teresa Vial.

It should be noted that recently the president of the CCS met extraordinarily with its member companies in order to determine their stance toward the Labor Directorate.
