As of February, the Latin American transactional market has recorded a total of 387 mergers and acquisitions, both announced and closed, for an aggregate amount of US$5.99 billion, according to the most recent report by TTR Data and Datasite.
These figures imply a 14% decrease in the number of transactions and a 16% increase in their amount, compared to February 2023.
Only in February, a total of 194 mergers and acquisitions were registered, both announced and closed, for an aggregate amount of US$ 3.39 billion.
Ranking of transactions by country
Brazil leads the ranking of the most active countries in the region with 245 transactions (a 16% decrease) worth US$5 billion (23% increase). Colombia follows, and for the first time it reaches second place in the ranking, with 41 transactions (an increase of 3%) and a value of US$688 million, a 686% increase compared to February 2023 .
For its part, Mexico drops in the ranking, with 41 transactions (11% down) and with a 45% increase in transaction volumes (US$ 477 million). Chile drops one position in the ranking and registers 36 transactions (a decrease of 42%) and a 50% fall in mobilized capital (US$ 177 million), in year-on-year terms.
Meanwhile, Peru rises one place in the ranking and presents 20 transactions (increase by 67%) and registers a drop of 83% transaction value (US$ 28 million). Lastly, Argentina decreases its activity and registers 17 transactions (15% down), with a reduction of 57% in their value (US$ 120 million).
Cross-border scope
In the cross-border area, the investment appetite of Latin American companies abroad stood out in February, especially in North America and Europe, where 11 and 10 transactions have been carried out, respectively.
For their part, the companies that have carried out the most strategic transactions in Latin America come from North America and Europe, with 55 and 40 deals, respectively.
Private Equity, Venture Capital and Asset Acquisitions
In February 2024, a total of 26 private equity transactions worth US$910 million were recorded. This reflects a downward trend in the number of transactions (-7%) and an increase of 5% in capital mobilized compared with the same period of 2023.
At its turn, the venture capital segment recorded a total of 97 transactions in the first two months of the year with an aggregate amount of US$ 515 million, which implies a 27% decline in the number of transactions and a decrease of 16% in transaction value in year on year terms.
In the asset acquisitions,84 transactions were registered through February with a value of US$ 1.4 billion, 82% more in terms of the number of transactions and 94% higher in terms of value when compared to same period in 2023.
