The Chancay Megaport is 85% complete and should open in November, says Peru's Minister of Transportation.

Peru has a package of railway investments that, added to that corresponding to the Central Highway, amounts to almost US$37,000 million, said the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Raúl Pérez Reyes.

He indicated that Peru is a country that has significant export volumes.

“Countries that have a large export volume have the train as their main means of transportation, because it reduces logistics costs,” he noted on TV Perú .

“In that sense, we have several routes and the one from Apurímac to Marcona is one of them, with a fundamentally mining purpose. We are going to try to get it to the Port of Marcona, which was granted a concession a few weeks ago,” he noted.

Likewise, he said that the terms of reference for a train that would leave Chota and arrive near Cajamarca and then go down to the coast, to Eten, Lambayeque, are being worked on.

“We are in studies to project what the port management of mining cargo will be, since in the case of Cajamarca alone there are four mining projects with several billion dollars in pending investment and the companies have shown us their interest,” said.

“Local trains such as the Lima – Ica one are being added, whose profile is yet to be approved, and we are beginning the studies of the Lima – Barranca section. We are also going to begin studies of the Barranca – Trujillo section,” he stated.

“These projects are being worked on from government to government in the case of construction and through a public-private partnership in the case of maintenance,” he pointed out.

He said that by deploying infrastructure we can go from an economic growth rate of 2.5% to 3% annually to another of between 4.5% and 5% annually.

"Thus, we have a package of railway investments, plus the Central Highway, which together add up to almost US$37,000 million, which will allow us to have a second relaunch of our exportable offer," he highlighted.

CHANCAY MEGAPORT

The minister said that the Chancay Megaport is 85% complete and the work should be inaugurated in November 2024.

“We are talking about a capacity of between 1 and 1.5 million TU. In June, the expansion of the South Pier will be inaugurated, which will allow it to have almost 2.7 million TU,” he stated.

“We fear that the Callo hub (North Pier and South Pier) - Chancay is the second most important hub in the region, since we have a capacity of more than 5 million TU and the expansions will take us above 7 million TU” , he pointed.

He indicated that the North Dock and South Dock, as well as the Port of Chancay, have growth prospects.

This will allow us to increase our growth rate in the next 30 or 40 years and improve the income of Peruvian families due to better paying work.

“Here there is a fight against poverty that has growth and economic development as its goal,” he noted.

CHINCHERO AIRPORT

On the other hand, he stated that 42 million soles (US$ 11 million) have been injected to pay debts to the peasant communities and to restart work on the terminal and begin work on the perimeter fence.

“We are giving sustainability to the project. This is a priority project for the government and it will not stop. “It is on track,” he said.
