The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Tuesday that talks with Argentina on a new program are "advanced" and that the Fund's technical team is consulting with the Executive Board.

The IMF Board was scheduled to meet on Tuesday, with Argentina's eligibility for a new program under the Exceptional Accessibility Policy (EAP) on the agenda, given that the country is indebted beyond the institution's usual limits.

The EAP requires informal meetings with the Board of Directors before any agreement announcement, in part to ensure that loan criteria are met.

The Fund did not provide further details, and the Argentine government declined to comment.

IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack previously said the Fund "continued to make positive progress toward a program, and we are working constructively with the Argentine authorities on this matter."
