The Andean country would exceed US$64,355 million in 2023. Specialist points out that favorable prices for metals such as copper should be taken advantage of.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has recently highlighted the good management of the Peruvian economy and the Andean country's commitment to the multilateral trade system.

These statements are supported not only by the current trade balance but also by its positive projections, since Peru could record a new annual export record in 2024.

This 2024 becomes favorable for foreign trade due to an increase in the price of metals such as copper, which would allow a remarkable result, according to Eduardo Castellanos, professor of Economics at the Universidad del Pacífico (UP).

"This year we could be facing another record and exceed the US$64,355 million of 2023. Not so much because we have increased the volume of production but because the prices have been favorable to us and congratulations," Castellanos told the Andina Agency .

The teacher considered that even more favorable figures could be obtained if there is a commitment to promoting mining investment in projects such as Tía María or Conga.

"There are challenges in the issue of agriculture and mining. To face them you need social peace and citizen security," he noted.

The UP professor considered that the WTO has been able to highlight the positive aspects of the Peruvian economy, although not in a technical environment.

EXPORTS IN 2023

Peru achieved a historical export record by reaching US$64,355 million in 2023.

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Mathews, highlighted at the time that the value of Peruvian exports of goods once again achieved, and for the third consecutive year, a historical record, exceeding US$64 billion in 2023.

Peruvian shipments to the world reached 180 destinations, with China being the main destination of Peruvian exports (36% of the total), followed by the United States (14%), European Union (11%), Canada (5%) and India ( 4%). The Asian continent accounts for 51% of total exports, followed by America with 33% and Europe with 15%.

In addition, a record number of 9,331 exporters was registered, 2.2% more than in 2022. Within that total, 29% exported agricultural products (2,730) and 14% exported minerals.

It should be noted that, in 2023, a set of 6,401 micro, small and medium-sized companies (MSMEs) made shipments abroad (1.6% year-on-year growth) for a value of US$ 2,746 million (28.9% year-on-year increase). Likewise, MSMEs accounted for 69% of the number of exporters.
