Ecuador, the second safest country in the region

The rate of homicides and violent deaths historically decreased in the country. For example, in 1989 the country had an incidence of 11.20 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

Quito. The Minister of the Interior, José Serrano, affirmed the national government's commitment to closing the year with a historic rate of six deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

With this average, Ecuador is ranked second among the safest countries in the Region in the Latinobarómetro ranking, after Nicaragua.

The rate of homicides and violent deaths historically decreased in the country. For example, in 1989 the country had an incidence of 11.20 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. A figure that increased, since in 1996 the percentage was equivalent to 15.25, until reaching a peak of 18.74 in 2009.

Since then, preventive strategies began to be proposed to prevent crimes from occurring. Also, constant patrolling was proposed in places considered as 'red zone' at night and early morning. In addition, the trial and agility in criminal proceedings, to prevent defendants from leaving because they were not sentenced in a year.

In this way, the statistical bar of the country's history of homicides and murders went down. Reaching a rate of 8.13 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2014, to a current figure of 5.26 from January to October 2015. The final goal at the end of the year is six cases.

The National Directorate of Crimes against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnappings (Dinased) has handled a total of 930 cases so far this year. Of them, Serrano explained, 621 include murders, 227 homicides, 58 femicides and 24 hitmen. Of the total, 59% have been resolved, that is, 549 cases with 669 people detained.

A figure that seems high, but which contextualizes a decrease of 18.42% of those presented in 2014. Year in which the unit handled 1,140 cases in the same period. Serrano indicated that the Ministry of the Interior will continue to execute resolutions in favor of citizen security and peaceful social coexistence of all Ecuadorians. For this, 80% of the resolution of the cases that are presented will be used as a basis in 2017.
