Although they are still a minority in the national market, sales of hybrid and electric cars in Mexico have grown significantly, already in double digits, in recent years.
During January 2024, automotive companies in Mexico managed to market 7,442 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars, according to figures published by the Inegi (National Institute of Statistics and Geography).
This level of sales implied a growth of 74.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, when 4,263 units were sold.
Mexico City is the entity that leads the sales of hybrid and electric cars: it concentrates 25.8% of the total units sold. In absolute terms, at the beginning of the year it sold 1,923 units.
The State of Mexico and Nuevo León complete the top three states with the highest consumption of what are also called green vehicles. During January they recorded sales of 928 and 703 units respectively.
At the other extreme, it was observed that in entities such as Nayarit, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Guerrero and Durango, sales of hybrid and electric cars do not exceed 40 units per month.
PRODUCTION, IN LINE WITH SALES
Faced with greater demand for green cars, automakers with production plants in Mexico have also increased the assembly of this type of units, both for domestic sale and for export.

CHILE'S AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR IN CRISIS
On the other hand, Chile's automotive sector continued to be affected by the fall in company investment and the lower liquidity of citizens in March, marketing 23,525 units with a contraction of 37.4%, compared to the same period of the year. former.
This decrease is explained, mainly, because the comparative base is significantly high, due to the change in emissions standards from EURO 5 to EURO 6b that affected new light and medium vehicles in March of last year, resulting in that on that date they had to be brought forward. the first registrations and patenting of a large number of units that, otherwise, could not have been marketed.
As a result, the base month of comparison (March 2023) closed with more than 37,000 vehicles sold, an extraordinary figure, considering that the seasonality of the first quarter is usually around 30,000 average monthly units in the last ten years.
In a separate mention of the specific situation of the emissions standard, in accumulated terms, the automotive sector closed with sales of 71,092 new units during the first quarter, with a decrease of 22.2% in relation to the same months of the previous year. .
