Minister of Labor of Peru proposes possible increase in the minimum wage in the second semester

The minimum wage could be increased in the second half of 2024 (currently at US$266.4) if the economy continues to grow, the Minister of Labor and Employment Promotion, Daniel Maurate, said today, Tuesday.

He indicated that the increase could be evaluated in the second half of the year if the economy continues to grow and it would be an agreement between employers and workers.

“The increase must be rational and technical so that informality is not affected,” he noted after the signing between the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE) and the Spanish Embassy on the declaration of intentions in favor of strengthening capital. human.

The Peruvian economy grew 5.28% in April 2024, above what analysts expected, driven by the Agriculture, Fishing, Manufacturing, Construction, Electricity, Gas and Water, Transportation sectors, among others, reported over the weekend. the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

During the period from January to April 2024, economic activity grew 2.38% and in annualized terms (May 2023-April 2024) it expanded 0.30%.

It should be noted that the last time the minimum wage was increased was in May 2022, when it increased from US$241.7 to US$266.4.
