Peru seeks agreement with China to replace public transport units with electric vehicles

They are working on a bill to eliminate import taxes on electric vehicles for public transportation.

The Minister of Transportation and Communications of Peru, Raúl Pérez Reyes, indicated today Wednesday that there is great interest in replacing public transportation units with electric vehicles and that for this purpose it is proposed to establish an agreement with the Chinese government for the respective financing.

He said that the Peruvian delegation in China has met with the companies Huawei and BYD, the largest producer of electric vehicles in the world.

"Indeed, there is great interest in replacing public transport units with electric vehicles. To do so, it is proposed to establish an agreement with the Chinese government to obtain a financing guarantee line," he told Tv Perú.

"The idea would be that, when they visit us for APEC, this agreement can be signed to replace, in the next three or four years, a significant number of taxis that circulate in Lima or the 20,000 vehicles with up to 25 passengers, known as combis. ”, he emphasized.

He said that his sector is working on a bill together with the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Congress of the Republic to eliminate the payment of taxes on the import of electric vehicles that are intended for public transportation. "This includes taxis," he noted.

Financing

“We have also expressed our interest in putting together a financing package for the acquisition of electric cars to renew the taxi fleet in Peru in order to replace the old units,” he said.

Likewise, the renewal of public transport units such as combis would be considered.

“We have another meeting planned with the BYD company to see how this program could be implemented, which would contribute to improving air quality and also to formalize the taxi service and urban transportation, in general,” he commented.

Pérez Reyes explained that during the visit to the city of Shenzhen they were presented with the main advances in telehealth, teleeducation, data center connectivity, digital medical records and 5G connectivity.

Telecommunications

On the other hand, he commented that he participated in meetings with representatives of cell phone manufacturing companies such as TKD and Honor.

Likewise, he met with companies that develop security systems that are interested in the Peruvian market.

“They are going to send a team to Peru to meet with the Minister of the Interior to see how they can support security issues and the fight against crime in our country,” he stated.
