The Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Castro Vargas, confirmed that it is an important development opportunity for Arequipa and the entire country.

The Minister of the Environment of Peru, Juan Carlos Castro Vargas, confirmed today that the Tía María mining project has complied with all environmental regulations and is an important development opportunity for Arequipa and the entire country.

He pointed out that the population should be calm, because his sector will supervise compliance with its Environmental Impact Study.

“At the time, Tía María has complied with all environmental requirements, it has the environmental impact study approved. Several of the questions that were raised at the time, such as the issue of water, were resolved,” he said.

He stressed that the Tía María project should not be seen as a problem, but as an opportunity for development. “Tía María must be seen as a development opportunity for the Arequipa region, a development opportunity for the country. Tía María is an important project,” he stressed.

He emphasized that all worrying aspects regarding the environment have been resolved in the Environmental Impact Study. “What we need today is for this project to start moving forward and for the social organizations that still think that there is still something to be resolved in the Peruvian State and the company itself, we agree to be able to listen to them,” he stated in an interview with the Red de Regional Communication.

He maintained that today it is up to the Ministry of the Environment, through its environmental evaluation body, to supervise Tía María when it begins.

“The project has not yet completed the construction stage, much less is it in the operation stage, but when it begins, our role is to supervise compliance with the Environmental Impact Study and give peace of mind to the population. “We are fulfilling the role of protecting the environment,” he pointed out.

“Dialogue is always important to clarify doubts and fears about the project, but the important thing is that we must think that it is an opportunity for Arequipa. Aunt María has complied with everything,” he stressed.
