After that, a two-month trial period will begin and it will operate commercially from the end of January 2025.

The construction of the new multipurpose port terminal of Chancay, located 80 kilometers from Metropolitan Lima, is 91% complete and will be ready for inauguration next November, within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit, to be held in Peru.

“We are close to 91% of the overall progress of the work. On August 5, the tunnel was connected from east to west, we have practically assembled the three cranes on dock 2, the six cranes on docks 3 and 4, and now the three cranes on dock 1 are being assembled,” said Mario de las Casas, manager of Institutional Relations at Cosco Shipping Ports.

“We would only need to get one ship with the last shipment of cranes, which is scheduled for September 12, and with that we would have everything related to cranes and equipment, such as unmanned trucks,” he added.

Mario de las Casas said that after the inauguration of the port of Chancay, in the second half of November this year, a trial period or white paper will begin.

"This is where the so-called trial phase begins, because tests will be carried out, ships will arrive to continue carrying out tests, and commercially we should begin operations at the end of January or in the first week of February 2025," he said.

The executive recalled that the Chancay port project includes a total of 15 docks, but in the first stage four will be enabled: two docks for bulk or oversized cargo and two container docks.

“The container part is 100% automated; the oversized cargo part does have operators and is not 100% automated. All the equipment would be finished, if it arrives as planned, in the second half of September,” he explained.

“The development of the remaining docks will be a matter of market economy, that is, if demand for the four terminals continues to grow, expansions will be made, but this will be a little further in the future,” added Mario de las Casas.

“This port was born with cutting-edge technology, all the equipment will be 100% electric, there is no combustion equipment. The efficiency level of this port is very high and it has the capacity to receive the largest ships in the world,” he said.

The port of Chancay will be a key maritime point for trade between South America and Asia, mainly China (Shanghai port), because it will become a regional hub that will redistribute cargo from Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil.

The construction of the Chancay port generated 1,300 direct jobs, and around 8,000 indirect jobs due to the economic dynamics already observed in the area.

Since April 2011, the design and construction project for the Chancay port has been underway, with a total investment of over 3.4 billion dollars, of which 1.315 billion will be spent in the first stage.
