Mexican auto unions ask Chinese brands to make their sales transparent

AMIA and AMDA have already asked the new government to force manufacturers such as BYD, SEV, Geely and GAC to publish the data, if necessary, in order to create a climate of healthy competition and to provide more information to consumers.

The Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) and the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) have called for Chinese brands that have been operating in Mexico for more than a year - such as BYD and SEV - to make their sales information "transparent", inform the authorities and exercise good competition practices in the Mexican market.

"There is a deviation in terms of transparency and quality of information, therefore, it is important that all competitors in the Mexican market make a commitment to transparency and good competition practices, so that they immediately report to Inegi," said Guillermo Rosales, president of AMDA.

He pointed out that reporting to the administrative registry of the automotive industry of the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI) is voluntary, however, it is important that they access it as a sign of commitment to healthy economic competition.

Even though the reasons for not reporting sales are unknown, Odracir Barquera, general director of AMIA, said that the president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has already been asked to implement a mechanism that forces all participants to make the information transparent.

He explained that the automotive industry has become a measurable benchmark for the Mexican economy, so it is urgent to have all the data to have a complete overview of all participating brands.

“It is essential that all market players report their data and it is fundamental to understand the complete behavior of the market and provide transparency regarding vehicle sales,” said the leader of the private organization that represents the automotive companies operating in Mexico.

AMIA works hand in hand with Inegi and its sales report “has become one of the most timely in the economy and it is important that players have their information,” said Odracir Barquera.

According to AMDA and AMIA, based on Inegi, only Chinese brands such as MG, Chirey-Omoda, Motornation, Great Wall Motors and JAC report their vehicle sales and imports. And these automotive companies represent 8.8% of total sales in the Mexican market.

However, there are a significant number of Chinese brands that have recently arrived in the country that do not submit their information to Inegi, which means there are gaps in the information.

Wave of brands

Since 2022, the wave of arrival of Chinese light vehicle brands to the Mexican market has accelerated, with the strong expectation of having a strong presence in Mexico and taking advantage of its network of trade agreements to export, mainly to Latin America and in the future to the United States.

Although two years ago there were seven brands from the Asian giant in Mexico, now at least 10 more have been added, and as many heavy truck brands.

BYD has introduced at least eight different models of cars (combustion and electric) in Mexico and has an alliance with Liverpool to market its units. However, neither the carmaker nor the department store have reported the number of vehicles sold over almost two years of presence in the country.

Geely reported that it has 50 points of sale nationwide and plans to close with 75 agencies, so that "it is likely that when it completes its first year of operations in Mexico it will report the number of cars sold."

He stressed that the commitment to Mexico is of great importance, so much so that Zeekr, his luxury brand, also began selling it.

SEV is another of the car manufacturers that has not reported its sales to Inegi, although it works with the recently created Electro Mobility Association (EMA) to report the sale of electric cars.

For private organizations, making car sales figures transparent will help consumers shape their purchasing choices for a new car, as well as help Chinese competitors comply with regulations and be transparent.
