From January to July 2024, container movement per unit was in the order of 3,135,968 compared to 2,629,843 in the same period of 2023, representing an increase of 19.2%.
The movement of containers, cargo and passenger transport in Panama's port terminals registered cumulative growth in July, according to official figures from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).
A report from the entity indicates that the movement of containers in the Panama port system showed significant growth as of July of this year. From January to July 2024, the movement of containers per unit was in the order of 3,135,968 compared to 2,629,843 in the same period of 2023, which represents an increase of 19.2%.
The movement per TEU (cargo capacity of a 20-foot container) reflects an increase of 18.5%, with 5,598,641 in 2024 versus 4,722,746 in the previous year.
For its part, cargo movement in state and private ports showed an increase of 15%, comparing the 70,831,169 metric tons in July of this year, versus the 61,566,366 metric tons in the same period in 2023.
Domestic passenger transport (people who travel by boat from one point to another in national waters, including foreigners) also reflected a growth of 1.5%, transporting 1,233,685 passengers by water as of July 2024; while as of July 2023, the figure was 1,215,187.
The port indicators reflect the monitored items that are related to the movement of national and international cargo, the movement of containers by operation, type (in units and TEU), bulk cargo (liquid and solid), domestic and international passengers, vehicle movements and the arrival of cruise ships that have been registered in Panamanian ports; among other measurement data of the maritime sector.
