Colombian imports grew 4.6% in August

According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), imports in that month amounted to US$ 5.532 billion (CIF).

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) reported that in August, Colombian imports amounted to US$ 5,532.9 million (CIF), which translates into an increase of 4.6% compared to the same month last year.

The group that accounted for the largest number of imports was manufacturing, which alone accounted for US$ 4,101.8 million, which translates into a share of 74.1%, as well as a growth of 6.1%.

Other product groups also recorded significant variations. Fuels and extractive industry products accounted for US$ 646.8 million, with a variation of 9.9%; while agricultural products, food and beverages totaled US$ 780.1 million, which implied a fall of 14.6%.

So far this year (January - August), Colombian imports amount to US$ 41,686 million, a figure that is slightly lower than that recorded in the same time window of the previous year (-0.9%).

The bulk of Colombian imports come from China, which has a 27.2% share, followed by the United States (26%); Mexico (4.5%); Brazil (4.4%); Germany (3.6%); India (2.5%); Japan (2.4%).

“The increase in imports originating in China in August 2024 compared to August 2023 was explained by higher purchases of Cell phones (14.8%), Parts and accessories (129.8%), Digital telecommunications equipment (57.8%) and Polycarbonates, alkyd resins and other polyesters (94.4%),” DANE reported.
