Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison after being found responsible for the crimes of collusion and money laundering in the Interoceanic case, sections 2 and 3.

The sentence against the former president will be counted from April 23, 2023, the date on which he was extradited from the United States to Peru, so it will be fulfilled on October 22, 2043.

"This collegiate body, taking into account the arguments of the representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office; also, since it is public knowledge that Mr. Alejandro Toledo Manrique held the highest position in the public administration within Peru, this collegiate body assumes the request made by the representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office," said Judge Inés Rojas Contreras of the Second National Collegiate Criminal Court.

According to the preliminary sentencing, the former president was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment and three years of disqualification for the crime of collusion, and for the crime of money laundering he was sentenced to 11 years and six months of imprisonment and 242 days of fine.

The verdict states that Toledo Manrique colluded with interested parties such as Odebrecht so that, through a bribe of US$35 million, the Brazilian company was awarded the contract for the construction of sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceanic Highway, causing harm to the State.

The court also imposed nine years in prison for the crime of collusion on former members of the Proinversion committee Sergio Bravo Orellana and Alberto Javier Pasco Font Quevedo, who with their conduct validated the illegal act promoted by Toledo Manrique.

In this same case, the court acquitted Abraham Dan On, former head of security for Toledo Manrique, as an accomplice to the crime of collusion in this case.

The amount of 1.375 billion soles (about US$ 365 million) plus US$ 463 million was also established as civil compensation to be paid by those found guilty in this process.

Judge Inés Rojas Contreras reported that on October 31 of this year, at 10:00 a.m., the full sentence for the Interoceanic case, sections 2 and 3, will be read.
