The Government of Peru, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), announced today that agricultural exports are maintaining their growth rate and have accumulated shipments of US$ 6,755 million in the first eight months of this year (January-August), which represented an increase of 17.8% compared to the same period in 2023.

According to official records, traditional agricultural exports totaled US$ 626 million, a figure that represented an increase of 55.9% compared to the figure recorded in 2023, due to higher shipments of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee (US$ 546 million) and other cane sugars without added flavoring or coloring (US$ 22.6 million), whose sales increased by 72.7% and 199.9% respectively.

These products accounted for 90.9% of traditional agricultural exports, Midagri said.

Non-traditional

He highlighted that non-traditional agricultural exports reached US$ 6.129 billion, an amount 15% higher than that observed in the same period last year.

The main products in the agro-export ranking in the first eight months of the year analyzed were: avocados with shipments worth US$ 1,161 million (18.9% share), fresh blueberries with US$ 546 million (8.9%), fresh grapes with US$ 499 million (8.1%), other raw cocoa beans with US$ 496 million (8.1%), fresh asparagus with US$ 212 million (3.5%), other citrus fruits with US$ 207 million (3.4%).

He stressed that these 10 products together account for 59.5% of the non-traditional exportable supply.

The products that contributed positively during the first eight months were: roasted cocoa beans (increase of 1,018.8%); cocoa butter with an acidity index expressed as oleic acid less than or equal to 1% (419.4%); other presentations of cocoa beans, whole or broken, raw (299.1%); defatted cocoa paste (293.9%); other citrus fruits (54.7%); fresh blueberries (42.6%); avocados (27.8%), among others.

Midagri also highlighted that, from January to August, the export of non-traditional products, including only fruits and vegetables, totaled sales of US$ 3,469 million (56.6% of non-traditional agricultural exports), a figure that represented an increase of 9.2% compared to 2023.

Main markets

He also stressed that the 10 main destination countries for Peruvian agricultural exports were: the United States, Holland, Spain, Chile, Ecuador, England, Mexico, Germany, China, and Belgium.

This group of countries accounted for 75.2% of the total value of exports during the study period, that is, January-August of this year.

Likewise, as of August 2024, the agricultural trade balance registered a surplus of US$ 2,601 million, an increase explained by the greater increase in agricultural exports (US$ 1,144 million increase compared to 2023).

Only in August

On the other hand, he highlighted that in August alone, agricultural exports totaled US$ 1.122 billion, which meant a growth rate of 18% compared to the US$ 952 million recorded during the same month of the previous year.

In this month, traditional agricultural exports accounted for 16.2% of total exports, while non-traditional exports accounted for the remaining 83.8%.

In August, traditional shipments reached US$ 181.5 million, a figure that represented an increase of 47.4% compared to the same month in 2023, mainly due to the higher export of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee (US$ 153 million) and other cane sugars (US$ 21.8 million).
