It will have the capacity to produce 800 tons of this renewable energy source per year and is expected to begin operating in the first half of 2026.
Colombian company Ecopetrol will invest US$28.5 million (27.22 million euros) to build a green hydrogen plant with the capacity to produce 800 tons of this renewable energy source per year.
The company's president, Ricardo Roa, was in charge of making the announcement this Monday. The plant is expected to come into operation in the first half of 2026, at the Cartagena refinery, and will have a capacity of 5 megawatts (MW).
The green hydrogen generated will be integrated into the refinery's current capacity to hydrotreat fuels, which will reduce up to 7,700 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, similar to the emissions generated by 1,650 vehicles per year.
According to Roa, this is "great news" for the country, as it means that Ecopetrol is now "entering the modern era of clean fuel production." He also added that it will be the largest green hydrogen plant in all of Latin America.
"Producing 800 tons of green hydrogen at a competitive cost and with cutting-edge technology in our refinery is possible thanks to the fact that we had already announced the launch of our solar farm in Cartagena," said Roa.
