The project includes the construction of 12 vertical silos with the capacity to store 60,000 tons of clean grain, which will allow the terminal's capacity to increase from 25,000 to 85,000 tons.
Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) reported that the expansion works at the Callao Port's Multipurpose North Terminal, operated by APM Terminals, are 60% complete.
In the first half of this year, the port will launch a new, modern grain unloading system, an initiative that is part of an ambitious project to improve port infrastructure and increase its operational capacity.
This project includes the construction of 12 vertical silos with the capacity to store 60,000 tons of clean grain, which will increase the terminal's capacity from 25,000 to 85,000 tons, facilitating greater efficiency in the handling of goods.
The MTC stressed that the construction of 11 of the 12 silos has already been completed, while the foundation work on the last deposit is currently underway.
In addition, two continuous grain unloaders will be installed, an advanced technology that will significantly speed up the unloading process of vessels, reducing waiting times and improving the port's competitiveness.
These improvements are part of Phase 3A of the project and will position the Port of Callao as the most efficient grain terminal in South America. 2.13 hectares of pavements are also being built and important improvements are being made to the general cargo access gate, which will allow for optimizing the circulation and flow of goods in the area.
Investment
The investment in this project amounts to US$ 95 million. The North Dock of the port of Callao is a key player in the import of food products, handling 73% of the wheat, 54% of corn and 100% of barley cargo arriving in the country.
With these improvements, Callao will not only strengthen its leadership in grain management, but will also contribute to the efficiency of trade and food security in the country, the ministry said.
