This record value consolidates the country as the world's leading exporter of this fruit.
Peru has established itself as the world's leading exporter of blueberries, with a record figure of sales to the main markets of the world with more than 2.27 billion dollars by the end of 2024, and whose campaign will extend until April of this year, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
Last year, Peru ended with an extraordinary figure for blueberry production and exports, although the campaign still continues until April 2025. In this sense, at the end of 2024, an export volume of 326,000 tons was recorded, 57% above that recorded in 2023.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MIDAGRI) reported that over 11% of exports were organic and are aimed at covering an important segment of the international market.
In 2024, Peru has established itself as the world's leading exporter of blueberries; likewise, in 2023, despite the fact that its export volume and that of other suppliers such as Mexico and Colombia decreased, this lower exportable supply had an impact on the rise in international prices, favoring the increase in the value of Peruvian exports by 23% compared to 2022.
Similarly, it should be noted that average blueberry prices of $4.6/kilogram in 2022 rose to over $8.5/kilogram in the second half of 2023, and these rose above $8.9/kilogram in January 2024, and at the end of that year stood at an average of $8.5/kilogram.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MIDAGRI) said that, unless there are climatic phenomena generated by El Niño or La Niña, such as high temperatures, torrential rains or water shortages, which affect blueberry cultivation in the country, the volume of exports this year could exceed 350,000 tons.
Peru is able to offer blueberries outside the peak season that other countries such as Chile and the United States have, which have shorter harvest periods, and the conditions on the Peruvian coast and mountains allow for a continuous harvest throughout the year.
This constant supply of a quality product has made Peru the main supplier of fresh blueberries in key markets such as the United States, which is the largest importer, and China has substantially increased its demand.
Most blueberry exports in 2024 were directed to the United States market (55% on average), 21% to the Netherlands and 9% to Hong Kong, whose three markets accounted for 85% of the total exported to the world. In addition, a gradual increase in exports of this fruit to India, Russia, Taiwan, Singapore, Belgium, France, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, among other important markets with high purchasing power, is estimated.
