The former Peruvian president was found guilty of money laundering and receiving illicit contributions during his election campaigns. Humala's wife, Nadine Heredia, was also found guilty.

Peruvian justice sentenced former President Ollanta Humala to 15 years in prison on Tuesday (April 15, 2025), after finding him guilty of money laundering for receiving illegal contributions from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht and the Venezuelan government for his 2006 and 2011 campaigns.

Humala, 62, is the second of a total of four former presidents implicated in the Odebrecht corruption scandal in Peru.

"Mr. Ollanta Humala is sentenced to 15 years of effective imprisonment," said the judge in charge of the case, reading the first-instance ruling, which the former president's defense will appeal.

Humala's wife received the same sentence.

Humala's wife, Nadine Heredia, received the same sentence. Her brother, Ilan, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Odebrecht, whose bribery and corruption scandal has engulfed several Latin American countries, admitted in 2016 to having distributed tens of millions of dollars in bribes and illegal campaign donations in Peru since the beginning of the 21st century.

The ruling ended more than three years of hearings against the former center-left lieutenant colonel, who governed Peru from 2011 to 2016.

According to the prosecution, the scandal also implicated Alan García (2006-2011), who committed suicide in 2019 before being arrested; Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018), who is still under investigation; and Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006).

Toledo was sentenced in 2024 to more than 20 years in prison for receiving millions in bribes in exchange for public works projects during his administration.
