It should be remembered that in September 2022 the French company disconnected its last coal-fired unit from the Tocopilla Thermal Complex (CTT) and, after this announcement, on December 31, 2025 it would permanently exit coal-fired generation.

As of January 1, 2026, Engie would stop producing coal-based energy in Chile. This was communicated to the National Energy Commission of the southern country (CNE) when requesting authorization to cease operations of the Central Termoeléctrica Andina (CTA) and Central Termoeléctrica Hornitos (CTH) units, located in the Mejillones Thermal Complex (CTM). , for December 31, 2025.

This information is added to the various actions that the company is taking to fulfill its commitment to exit coal in 2025. In March of this year, the CNE authorized the conversion of Infraestructura Energética Mejillones (IEM) to gas and the withdrawal and disconnection of units 1 and 2 of the CTM.

“This communication to the authority demonstrates our commitment as a company to the decarbonization plan. The transformation that we lead involves the retirement of units, but also the development of new conversion projects that are fundamental for the energy transition.

In addition, we are building renewable energy parks and battery-based energy storage systems, which provides flexibility to the system,” explained Rosaline Corinthien, CEO of ENGIE Chile.

Together, CTA and CTH have an installed capacity of 350 MW and have been operational since 2011.

For Gabriel Marcuz, Managing Director ENGIE Flexible Generation & Retail, “these units provide and have provided energy and, consequently, security to the electricity supply for more than a decade.

Today we are advancing in our commitment to decarbonize the energy matrix, a process that has been advancing hand in hand with a Just Transition Plan, just as it was in Tocopilla, in order to carry out a transparent and open dialogue with both our unions, collaborators , community and authorities.”
