Mexican mining company Southern plans to invest US$8.5 billion in Peru in the next 8 to 10 years

Raúl Jacob, vice president of Finance of the company, also revealed that in the next 8 to 10 years Southern expects to increase its production by 520,000 tons of copper.

The Mexican mining company Southern Peru Copper Corporation plans to invest US$8.5 billion in Peru in its Tía María mining projects, expansion of the Ilo smelter, Los Chankas, Michiquillay and the expansion of Cuajone.

Raúl Jacob, vice president of Finance of the company, also revealed that in the next 8 to 10 years Southern expects to increase its production by 520,000 tons of copper. Currently, they produce around 350,000 tons in the Andean country.

Regarding Aunt María, Jacob confirmed that they are now ready to start construction. “We have worked very hard to advance social issues. The company has achieved good results and we are seeing a certain tranquility in the climate with which we carry out our activities.

We aim for (Tía María) to start operating in 2027 and we continue to move forward to start construction. There are 120,000 tons of copper per year that Tía María will provide. Possibly, this figure will be readjusted when construction begins,” he added.

In addition, Southern's representative declared that the Michiquillay project, a project located in Cajamarca, has an "estimated investment of US$ 2.5 billion and an annual production of 225,000 tons of copper." They plan to begin operations of the project in 2032.

Regarding the Los Chankas project, Jacob pointed out that they estimate to start operations by 2031. “We hope to produce 130,000 tons of copper and 7,500 tons of molybdenum, which is a metal that goes unnoticed among us, but is of great importance for Peru.” , he commented.

Meanwhile, Steven Lewis, Director of Project Development at First Quantum Minerals (FQM), one of the largest copper producers in the world, pointed out that in Peru they plan to strengthen the Haquira and La Granja projects.

“The Haquira project has one of the main copper deposits to be developed in the world; while La Granja is in the top 15 for copper to be developed worldwide,” revealed the director of FQM.

For his part, Gonzalo Tamayo, partner of Macroconsult, stated that Arequipa, where projects such as Tía María and Zafranal are located, “could receive US$ 4,000 million of investment in the next two years, which would be very relevant for the development.” from the south of the country.”
