Telefónica Hispanoamérica achieved 6% growth in fiber optic access and 1% in post-paid mobile in the first quarter

The company has 20.9 million homes and premises with access to contract or migrate to fiber optics to the home throughout the region.

In the first quarter of 2024, Telefónica Hispanoamérica reported that fiber optic broadband access to the home and cable reached 5.5 million users, an increase of 6% compared to the same period of the previous year. While in the case of post-paid mobile access (contract), the company managed to ensure that 25 million users have this service, a growth of 1% year-on-year.

In the fixed segment, this quarter the increase in fiber optic access to the home (FTTH) in Colombia (+37%) and Argentina (+24%) stands out. Likewise, homes and premises with access to hire or migrate to this technology amounted to 20.9 million, after increasing by 3.3 million in the last 12 months.

In the mobile segment, 97 million total accesses were reached, which represents a growth of 1.9% year-on-year. It should be noted that these results were impacted by a competitive environment in which the company has been making efforts to guarantee the sustainability of the sector. Likewise, in the first quarter of 2024 Telefónica Colombia activated its 5G network.

Financial results

In the first quarter of this year, revenues reached US$ 2,209 million, a decrease of 8.2% compared to the same period in 2023. This was mainly due to the impact of the depreciation of the Argentine and Chilean peso, as well as lower device sales and lower income in Chile. Revenue growth in Colombia (+7.8%) and Mexico (+10.2%) stands out.

Likewise, EBITDA decreased by 14.9% compared to the same period in 2023, also affected by the depreciation of the Argentine and Chilean peso, as well as lower revenues. The growth in EBITDA in Colombia (+20.2%) and in Mexico (+13.9%) stands out.

Responsible business

Telefónica Hispanoamérica in the case of Mexico contributed to recycling 152 tons of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as 23 tons of ferrous metal structures and 14 tons of rubble. For its part, Telefónica Argentina reinforced its commitment to the environment, with the objective of reducing direct and indirect emissions by 35% by 2024.

Likewise, Telefónica Colombia is the company in the sector with the best ranking in the Employers for Youth (EFY) 2023 study, which evaluates which are the best companies for young professionals in the country.

On the other hand, Movistar Chile obtained certification in the International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (SST), awarded for being an organization that provides a safe and healthy work environment through the identification and control of occupational risks. , reducing accidents, injuries and occupational diseases.

It is also worth noting that Telefónica de Perú renewed its ISO 37001 anti-bribery certification for 3 years, granted by AENOR.

Performance by country

In Chile, revenues decreased by 20.2%, mainly affected by the difficult competitive environment of the mobile segment (although signs of greater rationality are beginning to appear in the market) and the depreciation of the Chilean peso. EBITDA fell 35.2% due to lower revenues, partially offset by expense efficiencies.

On the other hand, in Peru the results in the country were affected by the difficult competitive environment, which meant that the company's income was 6.6% lower compared to the same period in 2023. However, there was an improvement in the trend of mobile income, mainly post-paid (contract). EBITDA fell 34.8% year-on-year.

Likewise, year-on-year revenues and EBITDA in Colombia grew by 7.8% and 20.2%, respectively, due to higher revenues from services, mainly fiber optic and prepaid, as well as the generation of efficiencies and the appreciation of the Colombian peso .

However, in Mexico the company continued to perform well, with an increase of 10.2% in revenue and 13.9% in EBITDA compared to the first quarter of 2023. These results were driven by the performance of the post-market segment. payment (contract), whose ARPU (average revenue per user) grew 4.5%. Lower rental expenses contributed to the increase in EBITDAaL-CapEx (+103.7% year-on-year).

Finally, in Argentina revenues fell by 20% year-on-year and EBITDA by 26.6%, affected by the depreciation of the peso against the euro (-308%), as well as by higher expenses related to inflation. This was partially offset by the progressive updating of rate plans and the lower impact of promotions.
