The Peruvian government monitored on Tuesday, together with various media outlets, the progress of the port construction, which is located 80 kilometers north of Lima.

The new megaport of Chancay, in the north of Lima, is finalizing the final details to be inaugurated on November 14, with the presence of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte, an infrastructure with which the Andean country seeks to become "the Singapore of Latin America."

The Peruvian government monitored on Tuesday, together with various media outlets, the progress of the port construction, which is located 80 kilometers north of the Peruvian capital and is being built by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay.

"Our goal is to become the Singapore of Latin America, so that port cargo passes through here when going to Asia. When someone from Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina wants to go to Asia, they should think of Peru as a point of departure to Asia. That is what we are aiming for," Transport Minister Raúl Pérez Reyes told international media.

Currently, most cargo between Peru and Asia or Oceania is transported first through Central and North America, but when Chancay becomes operational, vessels of 18,000 to 21,000 feet (TEUs) will be able to reach their destination directly.

The new port will complete the first stage of its construction in mid-November, which has entailed an investment of approximately US$ 1.4 billion. It has four docks with a total length of 1,500 meters, 27 specialized cranes and 40 autonomous vehicles. But the next stage will be completed within four years and is expected to triple port cargo.

"This is a port that has the highest technology in terms of fully autonomous vehicles and 5G technology, all fully electric, which allows for a very small carbon footprint," he added, standing next to one of the enormous cranes that reach up to 90 meters in height.

He also stressed that, to ensure security and prevent crime, scanners donated by the United States Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) have been installed at the entrance where all containers arriving and leaving the infrastructure will pass through.
