The closure of the Colmotores automotive plant, operated by the American General Motors, affected nearly 800 workers.
A month ago, General Motors, an American automotive giant, reported that it would stop manufacturing vehicles in Colombia. The company had been doing it for decades at the Colmotores plant, being one of the main references in the industry in the national territory, as well as an important source of employment.
The reasons why the company decided to stop its operation are due to the business situation, where it is more profitable to manufacture in other countries and import to Colombia. Proof of this is that, in recent years, General Motors had been registering a very low demand for the installed capacity of Colmotores. The situation was also repeated in Ecuador.
This entire business movement has left more than 800 Colmotores workers in a kind of limbo, who must be separated from the company, with their respective liquidation.
An agreement has already been reached with many, where the company, he assures, has provided them with benefits beyond what is required by law. With the remainder, a solution has not been reached and, to guarantee compliance with a legal separation, the Colombian Ministry of Labor has provided support in this process.
This Wednesday, Minister Gloria Inés Ramírez met with the legal representative of Colmotores, Ervin Jiménez. The result of this conversation led to the agreement to install technical tables that would allow the solution of this labor conflict, in which three union organizations have also participated and have demanded guarantees and protection of workers' rights.
“It is important to tell the country that we have been working on the General Motors case. We have met with the workers and their three union organizations and also with company representatives to seek alternative solutions. We also request that, from the entity's Territorial Directorate of Bogotá, the installation of the technical tables be started to effectively allow both the workers and the company to move forward in the conflict they have today," explained Minister Gloria Inés Ramírez. Rivers.
For the Colmotores representative, it is important that these technical tables be installed, through which compliance with what the law establishes for the dismissal of all these workers can be guaranteed.
“We work together and seek to establish working groups to be able to reconcile the differences with the group of employees, with whom we have reached an agreement and together to be able to identify those exceptional cases and work together towards a solution,” he concluded.
