Unemployment in Chile fell to 8.5% in the February-April quarter

In twelve months, the INE noted, “employed people experienced an increase of 3.7%, affected by both women (4.5%) and men (3.1%).”

The National Institute of Statistics of Chile (INE) reported today, Thursday, that the unemployment rate during the February-April 2024 quarter was 8.5%.

“The figure represented a decrease of 0.2 percentage points (pp.) in twelve months, because the increase in the labor force (3.5%) was less than that presented by employed people (3.7% )", he pointed.

For their part, unemployed people increased 1.9%, affected by those looking for work for the first time (17.3%) and those who were unemployed (0.5%).

Compared to the same period of the previous year, participation and occupancy rates stood at 62.5% and 57.1%, growing 1.6 pp. and 1.5 pp., respectively.

The population outside the labor force decreased 3.1%, influenced only by habitually inactive people (-4.9%).

Increase in employed people

In twelve months, the INE noted, “employed people experienced an increase of 3.7%, affected by both women (4.5%) and men (3.1%).”

The sectors that contributed to the increase in the employed population were commerce (5.2%), public administration (13.1%) and transportation (6.9%); while by occupational category the increase was observed in formal salaried people (3.8%) and informal salaried people (5.5%).

Informality

The informal employment rate stood at 28.2%, with an increase of 0.8 pp. in a year.

Informal employed people increased 6.9%, affected by both women (9.1%) and men (5.2%); and by economic sector, mainly due to commerce (17.2%) and public administration (27.4%).

Unemployment in RM

Finally, the INE reported that in the Metropolitan region the unemployment rate for the February-April 2024 quarter reached 9.2%, with a decrease of 0.4 pp. in twelve months.

In the same period, the estimate of the total employed population grew 3.2%, affected by economic sector, by commerce (6%), public administration (15.5%) and professional activities (13.3%).
