The Minister of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho, reiterates the importance of mining in modern life and the sustainable future.

The Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru, Rómulo Mucho, reported today that the company Barrick Gold Corporation (with Canadian capital) is contemplating the exploration of five mining projects in the Andean country, one of which is in the southern border area.

“Barrick has five projects in Peru and has started with one in Tacna where it will invest in the exploration of the deposit, that is, it is a risk investment where (mineral) may or may not be found,” he said on the Regional Communication Network (RCR). .

The day before, the president of the Council of Ministers of Peru, Gustavo Adrianzén, announced the Government's decision to authorize the development of mining activities within 50 kilometers of the country's southern border area and after carrying out the corresponding analyzes it was decided to grant this authorization to the Barrick company to carry out explorations.

“All projects by foreign companies that are within 50 kilometers of the border require the approval of the Council of Ministers by supreme decree,” explained Rómulo Mucho.

“Barrick has been in Peru for many years, it is one of the largest gold producers in the world and is returning to explore deposits in our country,” he added.

It should be noted that Barrick began its operations in Peru with the Pierina mine (Ancash) in 1998 and after years of production proceeded with its closure. It also operated the Lagunas Norte mine (La Libertad) from 2005 until 2021, when it sold its stake to another mining company.

The minister reiterated the importance of mining in modern life because it contributes to the Peruvian economy and all critical sectors such as energy, manufacturing, industry and agriculture.

“It moves 45% of the world economy, with all its added value. Latin America has 75% of the world's lithium reserves and 45% of copper, within which Peru has important reserves," he indicated.

“Copper will play too important a role in human life, especially in addressing global warming. The future that is coming is overwhelming and we have to prepare to face it,” he added.
