XM presented the state of energy variables in Colombia and assures that energy generation was 6,983 GWh for the fifth month of 2024.
XM, operator of the National Interconnected System (SIN) and administrator of the Wholesale Energy Market (MEM), reported how Colombia fared in energy terms during May.
Without a doubt, the data that stands out the most is that related to the reservoirs that “closed their capacity with 43.69%, presenting a recovery of 10.78% compared to the end of April and the contributions stood at 97.91%. of the historical average, a value close to the historical average and consistent with the weakening of the El Niño phenomenon that has occurred in the country since May 2023," explains Juan Carlos Morales, manager of the XM National Dispatch Center.
This is how the main energy variables of the Colombian electrical system fared as of May 31, 2024:
The water contributions to the plants were located at 97.91% of the historical average, which allowed the aggregate level of the System reservoir to be 43.69% of the useful volume, 10.78 points above the level reported to the end of April 2024 (32.91%), although 21.73 points below the level reported at the end of May 2023 (65.43%).
The reservoirs of Antioquia reached 37.95% of their useful volume and represent around 31.36% of the system's reserves, followed by: Caldas with 50.3% and 1.55% participation; Caribbean with 70.22% and 1.5% participation; East with 39.85% and 18.63% participation; Center with 48.87% and 41.01% participation; and Valle, with 57.46% and 5.95% participation in the system's reserves.
Dumping
During the past month, there was water evacuated from the reservoirs through landfills and had a value of 1,016.24 GWh-month, which represents an increase of 875.97 GWh/month compared to April 2024 (140.26 GWh- month). These were presented in Hidroituango.
Water contributions
Water contributions closed May with an accumulated average of 97.91% (282.03 GWh-month), being below the historical average for said month (288.05 GWh-month).
The water contributions by region were: East with 124.79%, Valley with 116.63%, Center with 88.84%, Antioquia with 90.05%, Caldas with 88.32% and Caribbean with 131.36%.
Generation
In total, 6,983 GWh were generated in May. On average during this month, energy generation was 225.26 GWh-day, 1.28% less, compared to the generation in April 2024, which was 228.19 GWh-day.
84.04% of the generation, equivalent to 189.31 average GWh-day, was the product of renewable resources, while the remaining 15.96%, equivalent to 35.95 average GWh-day, was from non-renewable resources.
