The Minister of Transportation, Raúl Pérez Reyes, highlights that the port terminal marks a milestone for Peru and South America.

The Minister of Transportation and Communications of Peru, Raúl Pérez Reyes, indicated today that progress is being made in road projects that will connect with the Chancay megaport, such as the Lima-Barranca railway, the improvement of the Panamericana Norte and other road corridors.

“The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) considered it vitally important to develop a logistics axis that includes the improvement of the Panamericana Norte, with the construction of an overpass, in addition to the Chancay-Chancayllo Avoidance Road, the new road to to form the road pair of the Pasamayo variant and the railway between Lima and Barranca that will pass through Chancay,” he said.

During a visit to the Chancay megaport, Raúl Pérez Reyes indicated that these projects are included in the National Transportation Logistics Services and Infrastructure Plan for 2032, which seeks to develop the Chancay-Callao axis.

“We are working on all these projects, some have finished profiles and others are being developed. In some cases they are already at the technical file level, that is, we are talking about works that are on track to see results in the following years,” he stated.

“Another long-awaited project that has just had the chance to develop the pre-investment study is the Lima-Barranca railway, which will cover a track of more than 240 kilometers and will pass through the main population centers that connect Lima with Barranca,” he added.

The minister emphasized that the Chancay megaport represents much more than a simple infrastructure project, because it is a step forward in the future of economic growth and development of Peru.

“The Chancay multipurpose port terminal project marks a fundamental milestone for Peru, for Lima and also for South America. This work not only represents the promise of generating employment and promoting benefits for users of the international and international trade chain, but also places us in a privileged position in the port and logistics panorama of the region,” he said.

"With the Chancay terminal, transit times from Asia to the west coast of South America will be reduced, which will consolidate our position as an important port hub in the region and will contribute to improving our maritime connectivity." he added.

PROGRESS OF THE MEGAPORT

The new Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal, located in the district of the same name (Huaral province), 80 kilometers from Metropolitan Lima, is an investment project whose shareholders are the Chinese-owned company Cosco Shipping Ports Limited (CSPL) with a 60% participation, and the Peruvian Volcan Compañía Minera with 40%.

The Chancay megaport, whose works are more than 75% complete, will be a key maritime point for trade between South America and Asia, mainly China (port of Shanghai), because it will become a regional hub that will redistribute cargo from Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia.

The construction of the Chancay megaport generates 1,300 direct jobs, and around 8,000 indirect jobs due to the economic dynamics that are already observed in the area.

Since April 2011, the design and construction project of the Chancay megaport has been developed, whose total investment would exceed US$ 3,400 million, of which US$ 1,315 million will be executed in the first stage.
