Chilean table grapes prepare to compete in the US market with Systems Approach

“The Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile has worked tirelessly to reach this day soon, hand in hand with the Ministry of Agriculture and the United States Embassy," said the president of Fedefruta, Víctor Catán.

As excellent news for Chilean table grape producers, the president of the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta), Víctor Catán, described the statements of the United States Ambassador in Chile, Bernadette Meeham, who pointed out that expect news about the Systems Approach “very soon”.

The Systems Approach ensures phytosanitary conditions and high quality standards for table grapes, avoiding fumigation at destination and thus entering the North American market with better quality conditions, which will mean better positioning in the United States and thus achieving a fair competition with other bidders.

In this regard, the president of Fedefruta assured that producers are already working on the technical implementation and carrying out the necessary steps to be fully prepared when the regulations are implemented.

Catán highlighted that it was precisely this federation, which represents all fruit producers in Chile, which revived this long-awaited aspiration during its FruitTrade meetings, the largest fruit growing convention in the country.

“Fedefruta has worked tirelessly to reach this day soon, hand in hand with the Ministry of Agriculture and the United States Embassy, in joint work with Ambassador Meehan, the agricultural attaché, Bret Tate and his entire team, being able to resolve the technical aspects between the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),” explained Catán.

He recalled that "subsequently the problem arose with the name of the cheeses, so we developed joint work with all the inconvenients, where the Association of Exporters (Asoex) was a valuable collaborator, as was the dedication and care of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Likewise, he highlighted the work that Fedefruta carried out to implement this protocol, with the farmers' associations of Los Andes, San Felipe, Coquimbo and Copiapó.
