It will establish a team of 100 software engineers who, initially, will work in a hybrid manner from the Google Mexico offices.

The American technology company Google will expand its operations in Mexico, with the opening of an Engineering Center of Excellence in Mexico City, the company announced in a virtual conference.

To open this center, Google will establish a team of 100 software engineers who, initially, will work in a hybrid manner from the Google Mexico offices and who will be dedicated to the development of software infrastructure for the operation of other products.

Vacancies range from junior engineers to senior engineers with proficiency in frontend and backend programming languages, data structures and algorithms, and software design patterns.

Software infrastructure

Eduardo Bravo, director of Engineering at Google, visits Mexico to announce this expansion of the company's operations in the country. According to the manager, the company has had difficulties finding talent in locations like California, which is why it has decided to turn to Mexican talent.

“Finding Google engineers is a complicated process. Really, the requirements are high and when we are doing the studies of where to grow, Mexico stands out as a place where we believe we can create a center of engineering excellence,” said Bravo.

The engineering director of the technology company explained that the team that the company will open in Mexico will be dedicated to offering the software infrastructure that is used by the teams that develop and maintain products such as the Android operating system, the Workspace work suite and its platform. Competitive cost

Bravo assured that the cost of talent in Mexico continues to be competitive in the company's decision-making, to which is added the level of Mexican universities and the business activity of startups that have come to the country to hire engineers.

"There are several companies that have already come to hire Mexican talent that have given very strong signals to Google that this is an area where we want to grow and we see it as a project for many years," he said.

According to the job vacancies firm for the technology sector Hireline, vacancies in information technology areas offered from its site fell 45% during 2023, going from 16,992 in 2022 to 9,303 the following year. However, while the minimum wage in Mexico is US$404.5 per month, the average salary of a worker in the technology area is US$1,779.6 per month.

Google began operations in Mexico with an office dedicated primarily to its advertising business. In 2021, the company opened a software support center in the country and in 2022 announced the opening of a data center region in the Bajío region, as part of a US$ 1.2 billion investment it announced for Latin America.
