The sectors that contributed to the increase in the employed population were public administration (16.9%), transportation (5.3%) and health activities (4.2%).
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported this Friday that the unemployment rate in Chile during the March-May 2024 quarter was 8.3%.
The figure represented a decrease of 0.2 percentage points (pp.) in twelve months, because the increase in the labor force (3.1%) was less than that presented by employed people (3.3%). .
In the Metropolitan region, meanwhile, the unemployment rate in the same quarter reached 8.6%, with a decrease of 0.6 pp. in twelve months.
In the same period, in that area of the country, the estimate of the total employed population grew 3.4%, influenced by economic sector by public administration (23.4%), commerce (3.2%) and education (6 .6%).
National unemployment stands at 8.3%
At the national level, unemployed people increased 0.5%, influenced by those looking for work for the first time (18%).
Compared to the same period of the previous year, the participation and occupancy rates stood at 62.2% and 57%, growing 1.3 pp., in both cases.
“The population outside the labor force decreased 2.4%, influenced by habitually inactive people (-3.2%) and inactive people (-3.8%),” the INE noted in its report.
Increase in employed people and informality
In twelve months, the estimate of the total number of employed people experienced an increase of 3.3%, influenced by both men (3%) and women (3.7%).
The sectors that contributed to the increase in the employed population were public administration (16.9%), transportation (5.3%) and health activities (4.2%); while, by occupational category, the increase was observed in formal salaried people (3.2%) and informal salaried people (7.1%).
Finally, the INE detailed that the informal employment rate stood at 28.2%, with an increase of 0.8 pp. in a year.
Informal employed people increased 6.4%, affected by both women (8.7%) and men (4.5%); and according to economic sector, mainly due to commerce (12.2%) and public administration (37.6%).
