German GIZ will finance an energy transition project in Bolivia with US$ 5 million

The objective of the project is the creation of financial, organizational and technical conditions to increase the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and electric mobility.


    The Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy of Bolivia and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) of Germany signed a memorandum of understanding in Santa Cruz de la Sierra for the implementation of the project Strengthening the energy transition in Bolivia (ProTransition), which includes financing of 5 million euros (US$ 5.36 million at the current exchange rate).

    The memorandum of understanding has the purpose of facilitating the start of activities while the procedures for signing the Project Agreement are being carried out. The project is expected to begin on July 1 of this year and end on June 30, 2027.

    The objective of the project is the creation of financial, organizational and technical conditions to increase the use of renewable energies, energy efficiency and electric mobility as a contribution to compliance with Bolivia's Nationally Determined Contribution (CND) in the energy sector.

    The issues addressed by the project are related to the regulatory framework and sustainable financial mechanisms, the operation of the modern network, energy efficiency in the public sector and electric mobility in urban public transport.

    With this memorandum of understanding, the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy and GIZ reaffirm their commitment to Bolivia's energy transition and promote a more sustainable future aligned with national and international climate change mitigation objectives.

    AGREEMENT

    As background to this memorandum of understanding, it should be mentioned that on June 14 of this year, the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and Bolivia signed the 2022 Technical Cooperation Agreement for the project Strengthening the energy transition in Bolivia (ProTransition). .

    Germany's GIZ is an agency specialized in technical cooperation for sustainable development around the world. Its headquarters are located in Bonn, Germany. It was founded in 1975 by Erhard Eppler, and works mainly with public organizations.
