Global miner BHP said on Wednesday it has submitted an environmental permit application to build an electric transportation project at its Escondida copper mine in northern Chile for $250 million.

Located in the Antofagasta region, Escondida is the world's largest producer of copper concentrates and cathodes.

In a statement, BHP said that the investment contemplates the installation of infrastructure for the transit of extraction trucks in sectors where there is currently greater fuel consumption and that the initiative will allow it to advance its global goal of zero net operating emissions. greenhouse gases towards 2050.

The mine is an important part of the Chilean economy, since it represents several points of the GDP.
