The technology giant reached its goal seven years ahead of schedule and has been the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Spain for four consecutive years.

In 2023, Amazon has achieved the goal of operating only with 100% renewable energy seven years ahead of schedule, after managing to equate all the electrical consumption of its operations last year, including its data centers, with 'green' energy, reported the company.

The technology and distribution giant, which set this goal in 2019, has promoted more than 500 solar and wind projects around the world. Of these, 79 are in Spain and consist of 49 large-scale ' offsite ' projects and 30 solar rooftops on their buildings, which add up to a combined renewable capacity of more than 2.9 gigawatts (GW).

In addition, Amazon has been the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Spain for four consecutive years - the second country in the world in which it has promoted the most renewable energy projects, only behind the United States - and the World, according to BloombergNEF.

Since 2019, the American multinational has promoted the implementation of large-scale renewable energy projects in 27 countries, according to data from its 2023 Sustainability report.

Additionally, it has been a pioneer in developing large-scale renewable energy projects in places such as India, Greece, South Africa, Japan and Indonesia.

Likewise, it has also positioned itself as the largest corporate buyer of offshore wind energy in the world. The company is supporting around 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity at six offshore wind farms in Europe.

To maximize the efficiency of these projects, Amazon is collaborating with wind technology developers to optimize the design of the turbines. A major milestone was last year when Amazon-Shell's HKN Offshore Wind Project, located off the coast of the Netherlands and with more than 750 megawatts (MW) of capacity, became the first offshore wind farm enabled by the group to start operations.
