“(People) will be able to take (the train journey) from Palenque to Cancún and from Cancún again to Escárcega, the entire circuit that includes 1,540 km,” indicated the acting president of Mexico.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, explained that the Mayan Train is already operating from Palenque to Playa del Carmen without problems, and that work continues on sections five and six, particularly in the section from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.
“There has been more difficulty from Cancún to Tulum, because about 80 km of viaduct are being built. To make it better understood, they are second floors, in total there are 120 km, but 80 km go up so as not to affect underground rivers and cenotes; Environmental Protection work is being carried out,” said López Obrador.
According to the president, at the end of August, the opening of the section to Chetumal will be ready. While, before September 15, the inauguration of the entire complete circuit is contemplated, including all stations and the program of social development and conservation of associated archaeological sites.
"(People) will be able to take (the train journey) from Palenque to Cancún and from Cancún again to Escárcega, the entire circuit that includes 1,540 km," indicated the president of Mexico.
In addition, he explained that while part of the route will be single track, the 900 kilometers between Cancún and Chetumal will be electrified double track. This section will also feature an automated train control system, based on fiber optics, that will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour once it is fully implemented.
“It is a great work, there is no work like this in the world, nor do our friends who are very creative and hard-working in China have a work like this. Furthermore, it is the fast train that has been built in less time and with less costs in the world,” indicated the head of the Executive.
