Chinese companies manage more than 20% of the mining investment portfolio in Peru

The total portfolio of mining projects in the Andean country amounts to US$54,556 million.

Some US$11,371 million of investment have been committed by Chinese companies in seven mining deposits in Peru, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).

In this way, China is the country with the highest future investment in Peruvian mining, representing 20.8% of the sector's total project portfolio.

The seven projects with Chinese capital are Pampa de Pongo (Arequipa), El Galeno (Cajamarca), Chalcobamba (Apurímac), Don Javier (Arequipa), Repuesto Ferrobamba (Apurímac) and Río Blanco (Piura), as well as the expansion of Toromocho ( Junin).

Minem pointed out that investments in mining projects in Peruvian territory have a variety of financing sources that come from China, Peru, Canada, Mexico, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Switzerland, Japan and South Korea.

Canada rose to second place with an amount of US$ 10,335 million in nine mining projects, concentrating 18.9% of the total investment in the portfolio.

Thirdly, capital from Mexico is recorded, which presents a combined amount of US$ 9,450 million in seven projects, representing 17.3% of the total investment in the portfolio.

Investments from the United States reached an investment of US$ 7,750 million in three projects, representing 14.2% of the total investment in the portfolio.

Peruvian companies also plan to invest US$3,811 million in 10 mining projects, thus having a 7% participation in the total portfolio.

TOTAL PORTFOLIO

The report from the General Directorate of Mining Promotion and Sustainability (DGPSM) of Minem indicates that the “Portfolio of Mining Investment Projects 2024” is made up of 51 plans that encompass a total investment of US$54,556 million.

It indicates that the current portfolio registers an increase of 2.7% (US$ 1,426 million) compared to what was recorded in the July 2023 portfolio (46 projects and an investment of US$ 53,130 million).

According to the technical document, this increase in the portfolio is due to the incorporation of six new projects: Ferrobamba Replacement (US$ 1,753 million), Coimolache Sulfuros (US$ 598 million), Mina Justa Subterránea (US$ 500 million), Colquijirca Replacement ( US$ 431 million), Huancapetí Expansion (US$ 345 million) and Huachocolpa Expansion (US$ 167 million).
