Chile's basic food basket rose 5.9% year-on-year in July

In the detail of food, the rises in lettuce (12.9%) stand out, followed by storage potatoes (6.2%) and rice (5.7%).

The Chilean Government updated the value of the Basic Food Basket (CBA), which remains above $68 thousand pesos (US$ 72.7, approximately) and reached its highest level since January of this year, when it reached $69 thousand (US$ 73.8).

According to information from the Social Observatory of the Ministry of Social Development, the CBA reached $68,567 (US$ 73.3) in the seventh month of the year, rising 0.3% monthly and accumulating 5.9% over twelve months. The figure is below the variation of June (1.6%) and the CPI of the month (0.7%).

The poverty line per equivalent person was $232,255 (US$248.5), while the extreme poverty line was $154,837 (US$65.6), both rising by 0.7% in July and 5.0% over twelve months.

The value of the Basic Basket rises in July

In the detail of the foods in the Basic Basket, the increases in lettuce (12.9%) stand out, followed by storage potatoes (6.2%) and rice (5.7%).

Also among the products with the highest increases are carrots (5.6%) and chocolate (4.8%).

On the other hand, lemons continue to accumulate losses (-18.3%), as do tomatoes (-5.5%), sweet and non-sweet biscuits (-4.1%) and fresh or chilled hake (-3.8%).

A total of 34 foodstuffs saw their prices fall, with an average decrease of 2.0%. On the other hand, 42 products saw their prices rise by an average of 1.5%.
