Between 2013 and 2023, the demand for fossil fuels accounted for 79.9%. The Ministry of Energy presented the National Energy Balance.

Between 2013 and 2023, energy demand in the country increased by 18.3%, from 86.2 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) in 2013 to 102 million BOE in 2023. This includes the consumption of hydrocarbons, electricity, firewood, sugarcane production and non-energy products.

The transport sector is the largest consumer of energy, followed by the industrial sector, and in third place is the residential sector.

This is one of the statistics of the National Energy Balance (BEN) 2023, which was presented this week at an event led by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Goncalves, who highlighted that the report provides important data for decision-making.

“It is very important to understand how our complex system works, which is important in the energy matrix,” Goncalves said.

The document is updated every year and contains information on the country's energy situation, energy production and demand, oil, natural gas, electricity generation, hydropower, exports and imports, among other aspects.

Regarding energy consumption, the data show that transportation has recorded an average energy demand of 42.7 million boe in the last eleven years. In the industrial sector, average consumption is around 16.8 million boe in the same period. And the residential sector records 12.5 million boe.

Compared to 2022, the Balance Sheet shows that energy demand in 2023 increased by 1.8%, from 100.2 million to 102 million BOE.

By source of consumption, fossil fuels have been the most in demand, with an average share of 79.9% between 2013 and 2023. Within that, diesel and gasoline were the sources of greatest demand, showing an increase between 2013 and 2023 of 16.6% and 20.7%, respectively.

Regarding electricity, consumption grew by 45.4% in the last decade, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) increased by 35.9%, the report indicates.

On other topics, the Balance Sheet highlights the following figures:

Total production for 2023 reached 202.3 million BOE.

Oil production becomes the largest source of electricity production in the country, reaching 86%, followed by renewable energy (8%), natural gas (4%) and firewood and sugarcane products (1%).

Additionally, information is included on the CO₂ emission factor of the National Interconnected System 2023, which allows quantifying the reduction of CO₂ emissions associated with the production of electricity, by promoting the use of renewable energies and the implementation of energy efficiency, the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

The entity explains that the tool allows for quantitative analysis of greenhouse gas emissions in the country, which will help determine the potential for mitigation with non-conventional renewable energy, fuel reduction and the implementation of an energy efficiency plan.
