Trade between Peru and APEC members increased by 52% in the last ten years

Among the main mineral products exported are copper, raw gold and iron ore.

On the eve of APEC-Peru Leaders Week 2024, the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam) analyzed the impact of the economic bloc on Peruvian foreign trade operations in the last decade.

He highlighted that, from 2013 to 2023, Peru's trade with APEC member economies registered an increase of 52%, going from US$ 49,829 million to US$ 75,799 million.

He also said that trade between Peru and APEC economies reached a total of US$51.862 billion between January and August of this year.

“This important economic forum has favored the performance of national exports and imports, but it also stands out because it is one of the most important markets worldwide, since in 2022 it represented 62% of GDP, 48% of global trade and 38% of the global population,” said the head of Idexcam, Óscar Quiñones.

After analyzing the level of Peruvian exports to APEC member countries, Idexcam found sustained growth in the period analyzed, since in 2023, the export value totaled US$ 44,248 million, representing an increase of 77% compared to 2013 (US$ 24,956 million).

MAIN EXPORTED PRODUCTS

The main products exported to the economic bloc include: copper ores and concentrates; raw gold; copper cathodes and cathode sections; iron ores and concentrates; lead ores and concentrates; and fresh grapes.

Likewise, China stands out among the main export destinations to APEC in 2023 with a 52.32% share.

They are followed by the United States (20.73%), Canada (6.88%), South Korea (5.33%) and Japan (5.23%).

IMPORTS

As for imports of goods originating in APEC member countries, these have had variable growth in recent years, closing 2023 with a growth of 27% in value compared to 2013; with an imported value of US$ 31,551 million in 2023.

The main products imported to these countries were: diesel 2, diesel b5, smartphones, crude petroleum oils and tetrahelium-lead-free gasoline for automobile engines.

Meanwhile, the main countries of origin of these products are China with 40.27% share, followed by the United States (32.58%), Mexico (5.37%), Chile (3.92%) and Canada (3.56%).
