It will be the first Pacific logistics center in Latin America.
The long-awaited day has finally arrived, not only for foreign trade agents but also for Peruvian authorities and citizens. Today the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal is inaugurated with the presence of the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping.
Additionally, 16 dignitaries (heads of state) from the economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) are expected to participate in the inauguration of this modern port terminal.
The inauguration ceremony of the Port of Chancay will take place from the Government Palace of Peru, as planned, for security reasons for the illustrious guests.
COMMERCIAL AXIS
The construction of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal will allow the Andean country to become a commercial power, since it will be the first logistics center in the South American Pacific.
The launch of the Port of Chancay is expected to attract large foreign investments in the transport, logistics and services sectors.
The coastal city of Chancay, north of Lima, will thus become the new hub of regional trade. The infrastructure built by the Chinese state-owned company Cosco Shipping, with an investment of more than US$ 1.3 billion in its first phase, will attract the largest container ships and reduce the sea journey to China by 12 days.
"The Asia-Pacific region is the most dynamic in the world, with more than 60% of global production there, so having an infrastructure like the Port of Chancay will have a very positive impact on our economy," said Julio Pérez Alván, president of the Association of Exporters (Adex).
It should be noted that China is Peru's main trading partner. In addition, it is the country to which 353 micro and small enterprises (SMEs) export, with a total list of 386 products.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) estimates that one of the main impacts of the Chancay port will be the reduction of import logistics costs, which could be reduced by up to 25%.
ASSEMBLY PLANTS
According to the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP), the Port of Chancay has the potential to significantly influence the automotive sector in Peru, as well as in the entire region, from the import and export of vehicles to the possible installation of assembly plants.
"It is expected that with the launch of the first stage of the Port of Chancay, investments will be made that will allow the installation of vehicle assembly plants," he said.
In this regard, the Peruvian government's position is to promote the establishment of assembly plants in Chancay, mainly for electric cars, and to do so it seeks to attract investments from electric car manufacturers and automotive parts and pieces manufacturing companies.
CONSTRUCTION SITE
The Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal is located in the district of the same name (Huaral province), 80 kilometers from Metropolitan Lima.
It is a major project whose main shareholder is the Chinese-owned company Cosco Shipping Ports Limited (CSPL), with a 60% stake.
Due to its location and design, the Port of Chancay will be a key maritime point for trade between South America and Asia, mainly China (Shanghai port), because it will become a regional hub that will redistribute cargo from Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil.
The construction of the first stage of the Port of Chancay would have generated 1,300 direct jobs, and around 8,000 indirect jobs, generating an economic dynamic that is already observed in the area.
Since April 2011, the design and construction project for the Port of Chancay has been underway, with a total investment of over US$3.4 billion, of which more than US$1.3 billion was spent in the first stage.
