Daniel Noboa made the announcement via social media early this morning on December 10.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced early on December 10, 2024, through his social media, that there will be no more power outages in Ecuador starting December 20, 2024.

Noboa said his decision is based on four reasons:

1. Recovery of installed capacity, with the maintenance and recovery of thermal power plants we add 696.7 megawatts to the electrical system.

2. Incorporation of new energy, 100 megawatts of floating generation are operational, and 50 more will be added between December and January.

3. The purchase of energy from Colombia.

4. The improvement in weather conditions.

“2024 has been a tough year for everyone. The effects of climate change, coupled with the negligence and mismanagement of past governments, left a crisis in the electricity sector that deeply affected Ecuador. Those guilty of corruption in this sector have already been prosecuted. Danilo Carrera, brother-in-law of the former president (Guillermo Lasso), and Antonio Icaza, former manager of CNEL, were sentenced to ten and nine years in prison, respectively, for their acts of corruption in this sector,” said Noboa.

The president thanked Ecuadorians for their resilience and strength. “Just as you have shown yourself to be an example of perseverance, we have done everything necessary so that, regardless of the climatic conditions that affect us in the future, this will be the last energy crisis that hits Ecuador in this way,” he concluded.
