The operation seeks to reduce costs and is currently in full negotiations.

Carmaker Volkswagen is reportedly considering moving production of its Golf model from its Wolfsburg factory in Germany to Mexico in an attempt to cut costs amid negotiations with workers over the company's future.

Sources from the group consulted by Europa Press say they "do not comment on rumours" such as those published by German media consulted by Europa Press .

However, newspapers in the European country claim that "many scenarios" are on the table and that the future of Golf production "is the basis of one of them."

Considered one of the European group's flagship models, Volkswagen sold just 10,000 Golf vehicles in North America in 2023 and the electric version is not expected to hit the market until at least the end of 2028.

Currently, Golf production is carried out exclusively at the company's world headquarters in the German state of Lower Saxony. In Mexico, the group has a factory in Puebla, where it also produced the Beetle model for the North American market years ago.

In any case, this is one of the scenarios to be discussed in the next rounds of negotiations between the company's management and the workforce on the future of the company and the adjustment plan that considers the closure of three manufacturing plants in Germany and the consequent layoffs in an attempt to drastically reduce operating costs.

After eight generations of this vehicle, Volkswagen has sold more than 37 million units worldwide, exceeding the records of any other car of the company.

"The Golf is a cult car around the world and has been an anchor of stability for Volkswagen in Lower Saxony, Germany and far beyond for decades. And if I have my way, that will continue to be the case," warned the head of the works council, Daniela Cavallo.
