The National Institute of Statistics of Chile (INE) reported this Monday that during the September-November 2024 quarter, the unemployment rate in the southern country stood at 8.2%.

The informal employment rate stood at 26.9%, decreasing by 0.6 percentage points in twelve months.
“The number of informally employed persons decreased by 0.5% annually, affected only by men (-2.0%); and by economic sector, by trade (-4.5%) and other service activities (-8.0%), while, by occupational category, the impact was on self-employed workers (-3.5%) and unpaid family workers (-9.3%),” explained the INE.
In the Metropolitan region, meanwhile, the unemployment rate in the mentioned mobile quarter reached 8.6%, with a decrease of 1.1 pp. in twelve months. In the same period, the estimate of the total employed population grew 1.3%, mainly affected by economic sector, education (14.0%) and health activities (10.0%).
National unemployment rate stands at 8.2%
At the national level, "the number of unemployed people decreased by 4.9%, influenced by those who were unemployed (-5.3%) and those seeking work for the first time (-0.9%)," said the INE.
Compared to the same period last year, the participation and employment rates stood at 61.6% and 56.5%, increasing by 0.1 pp. and 0.4 pp., respectively.
The INE pointed out that the population outside the labor force increased by 0.7%, influenced only by potentially active inactive people (10.3%).
The unemployment rate for women stood at 9.1%, an increase of 0.1 percentage points in the period, due to a 1.2% increase in the workforce, higher than the 1.1% increase for employed women.
The number of unemployed women increased by 1.8%, while the participation and employment rates stood at 52.4% and 47.6%, increasing by 0.2 pp. and 0.1 pp. in each case. The number of women outside the labor force, on the other hand, expanded by 0.6%.
The unemployment rate for men was 7.5%, a decrease of 1.0 percentage points in one year, due to a 0.9% increase in the workforce, lower than the 2.0% registered by employed men.
The number of unemployed fell by 10.4%. The participation rate reached 71.1%, decreasing by 0.1 percentage points, while the employment rate reached 65.8%, expanding by 0.7 percentage points in the period. The number of men not in the labor force increased by 0.9%.
INCREASE IN EMPLOYED PEOPLE
Finally, in twelve months, "the estimate of the total number of employed people grew by 1.6%, influenced by both men (2.0%) and women (1.1%)", said the INE.
The sectors that contributed most to the increase in the employed population were health activities (9.0%), professional activities (8.7%) and teaching (3.6%), while, by occupational category, the increase was observed in “formal salaried persons (3.1%) and informal salaried persons (4.3%)”.
