Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her commitment to protecting native corn on Tuesday, highlighting its importance not only for biodiversity, but also for the country's health and culture.
At a press conference, he said that his administration is working on banning the planting of white transgenic corn and the importation of this product, as part of a comprehensive strategy to preserve this native plant.
On the other hand, the Head of State reported that the planting and importing of transgenic corn to Mexico is being reviewed because this issue has “many implications” such as food in the country or product prices; although she said that the main objective is to establish the protection of Mexican corn in the Political Constitution.
“What matters most to us is the protection of white native corn in our country, for several reasons, yes, for health reasons, but mainly for reasons of biodiversity protection. Biodiversity is of different types, from ecosystems to genetic biodiversity, and genetic biodiversity must be protected, particularly corn, but not only because if it is lost, then not only the plant would be lost, but also what the domestication of corn has meant culturally,” he said in his morning press conference.
He stressed that in the United States, corn production is mostly focused on yellow corn, which is used primarily for livestock feed.
The head of the federal Executive also addressed the risk of contamination of native corn due to the proximity of transgenic corn crops and explained that this threat does not arise from direct imports, but from planting in nearby plots; to resolve technical doubts, Sheinbaum announced that specialists will soon visit the National Palace to detail how this phenomenon occurs and the necessary preventive measures.
