Inflation in Chile fell 0.2% in December

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has accumulated a variation of 4.5% in the year.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported this Wednesday that in December 2024 the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Chile recorded a monthly variation of -0.2%, accumulating 4.5% in the year and 4.5% in twelve months with respect to the index's linked series.

"Five of the thirteen divisions that make up the CPI basket contributed negative impacts on the monthly variation of the index, and eight presented positive impacts," said the INE .

Among the divisions with price declines, the most notable were food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.9%) with -0.194 percentage points (pp.) and home equipment and maintenance (-0.9%) with -0.052pp.

The remaining divisions that had a negative impact together contributed -0.131pp.

The INE pointed out that among the divisions that reported monthly price increases, “housing and basic services stood out (0.3%), with an impact of 0.050pp.”

What went down in price

-International air transport: In December, it showed a monthly decrease of 12.2%, contributing -0.081pp. to the variation of the general indicator. It accumulated -11.8% in the twelfth month of the year.

-Potatoes: Recorded a monthly decrease of 16.6%, with an incidence of -0.067pp., and an accumulated variation of -26.9% in 2024.

-Wines: Recorded a monthly drop of 6.6%, with -0.058pp., accumulating 0.3% during the last year.

-Bread: It recorded a monthly decrease of 2.6%, with -0.056pp., accumulating 2.6% in 2024.

What went up in price

-Domestic air transport: Reported a monthly increase of 19.4%, with an incidence of 0.039pp., registering a variation of 16.5% during the last year.

-Food purchased in restaurants, cafes and similar: It registered a monthly increase of 0.7%, with 0.037pp., accumulating 7.9% during 2024.

Wages

Yesterday, Tuesday, the INE reported that, given the containment of inflation, the Nominal Remunerations Indices (IR) and Labor Costs Indices (ICL) registered increases in twelve months of 8.5% and 8.6% , respectively (in November 2024).

By economic sector, trade, manufacturing and construction recorded the highest annual positive impacts in both indicators.

The Real Remuneration Index - which measures the evolution of remunerations adjusted by the monthly variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) - grew 4.1% in twelve months , accumulating a variation of 1.8% by November 2024.
