It will allow you to request authorization to act as a railway operator in Mexico.
The Spanish Council of Ministers has authorized this Tuesday, at the proposal of the Ministries of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and Finance, the creation of Renfe subsidiaries in France and Mexico, with the aim of boosting its business in both countries, where it is already present.
The public operator's intention with this decision is to provide itself with the necessary organizational structure to strengthen its position in these countries, which means continuing to advance in the group's internationalization process.
The subsidiary in France, called Renfe France, Societé par Actions Simplifiée, will be established with headquarters in Paris and its corporate purpose will be to seek, execute and operate business expansion in the neighbouring country.
The creation of Renfe France, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Renfe Proyectos Internacionales SME, responds to the company's need for a vehicle with its own legal personality that groups together Renfe's various international businesses in this market.
In addition to participating in various public service tenders in France, Renfe already provides direct high-speed services between Barcelona and Lyon and between Madrid and Marseille. In the coming months, it will also launch a third international frequency between France and Spain, connecting Barcelona and Toulouse.
Regarding Mexico, it has already executed several contracts focused on the implementation of the Mayan Train, although the new subsidiary will focus on both existing activities and new business opportunities that arise in the country.
The headquarters will be in Mexico City and its name will be agreed upon after the response from the Mexican Ministry of Economy, so that the creation of this subsidiary will allow Renfe to have an entity with its own legal personality, which may eventually be authorized to act as a railway operator.
"This advance in the French and Mexican markets will be a fundamental step in the international growth strategy of Grupo Renfe, which is thus continuing its international expansion with the aim of consolidating itself globally as a railway operator and consultant," the company said in a statement.
Its internationalisation process aims to ensure that foreign business represents 10% of its income, for which it has structured these participations in a specific company called Renfe Proyectos Internacionales.
In the rest of the world, it already operates the Haramain high-speed railway line in Saudi Arabia, has entered markets such as Italy, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and is participating in projects such as Rail Baltica or in the United Arab Emirates.
