Inflation in Chile rose 1.1% in January, driven by higher electricity, wine and meat prices

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for 12 months reached 4.9%.

On Friday morning, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced that in January 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a monthly variation of 1.1%, accumulating 1.1% in the year and 4.9% in twelve months.

According to the report, “eleven of the thirteen divisions that make up the CPI basket contributed positively to the monthly variation of the index, and two presented negative impacts.”

Among the divisions with price increases, housing and basic services (2.7%) stood out with 0.481 percentage points (pp.) and home equipment and maintenance (1.7%) with 0.100pp.

The remaining divisions that had a positive influence together contributed 0.502pp, the INE said.

Among the divisions that recorded monthly price declines, insurance and financial services stood out (-1.0%), with an impact of -0.011pp.

Products

-Electricity supply: In January, it showed a monthly increase of 10.8%, contributing 0.327pp. to the variation of the general indicator. It accumulated 10.8% in the first month of the year.

-Beef: It recorded a monthly increase of 3.5%, with an incidence of 0.074pp., and an accumulated variation of 3.5% in the year.

-Wines: Recorded a monthly increase of 8.3%, with 0.068pp., accumulating 8.3% during the year.

-Common expenses: Recorded growth of 4.8%, with 0.067pp., accumulating 4.8% in the year.

-International air transport: Reported a monthly decrease of 14.2%, with an incidence of -0.084pp., registering a variation of -14.2% during the year.

-Seasonal fruits: Recorded a monthly decrease of 9.3%, with -0.041pp., accumulating -9.3% during the year.

Wages

Yesterday, the INE reported that real wages in the country have again registered increases due to the containment of inflation.

In December 2024, the Nominal Remuneration Indices (IR) and Labor Costs Indices (ICL) registered twelve-month increases of 7.3% and 7.6%, respectively.

By economic sector, the INE indicated that “commerce and manufacturing recorded the highest annual positive impacts in both indicators.”

The Real Remuneration Index - which measures the evolution of remunerations adjusted by the monthly variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) - accumulated a variation of 2.7% in 2024, thus adding 20 consecutive months of increases.

Seasonal foods are cheaper

At the same time, the Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture (Minagri), highlighted seasonal foods that are at convenient prices in different points of sale throughout the country.

The Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, visited the Vega Central to confirm the decline in the price of most fruits and vegetables during this summer season.

The authority pointed out that watermelons, squash, tomatoes, peaches, lettuce, among others, have shown lower prices.

As for the price of eggs, the minister highlighted the drop seen in recent weeks: he indicated that trays that cost between $9,000 and $10,000 can now be found for as much as $6,000.
