The aim of this measure is to ensure that the United States "is treated equally with other countries."
US President Donald Trump said Friday that he will announce new trade tariffs on several countries next week -- without specifying which ones -- in a move that seeks to equalize the rates that these nations impose on US products.
The aim of this measure is to ensure that the United States "is treated equally with other countries," Trump himself told the media in the Oval Office of the White House during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
"I will announce it next week, on reciprocal trade, so that we are treated fairly with other countries, we do not want more or less. So I will announce it next week," the US president said, according to statements collected by the press.
The reciprocal trade measure was one of Trump's promises during the presidential election campaign, when he promised to impose tariffs on imports at rates equal to those that trading partners impose on US exports.
Trade tariffs have become a pressure measure with which Trump is getting other countries to conform to his demands. After threatening Colombia and Mexico --among others-- with 25 percent tariffs, Bogotá agreed to accept deported migrants and the Mexican government reinforced border security to prevent illegal crossings into U.S. territory.
