Among the most notable US imports in the sector in 2024 are meat products, fruits and juices, bakery products and vegetables.

US President Donald Trump has predicted increased local agricultural demand due to tariffs he plans to put into effect on April 2.

“To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start producing a lot of agricultural products to be sold WITHIN the United States. Tariffs will be applied to products from outside on April 2nd. Have fun!” he said via the social network Truth Social.

The United States is an agricultural power, but also a major importer of commodities.

In 2024, its imports of food, feed and beverages rose at a year-on-year rate of 7.9% to $216.058 billion.

Among the most notable US imports in the sector that year were: meat products ($20.261 billion), fruits and juices ($29.832 billion), bakery products ($21.904 billion) and vegetables ($21.483 billion).

U.S. exports of food, feed and beverages totaled $165.256 billion in 2024, up 2.1% year-on-year, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Mexico ranks among the main suppliers of a wide range of fruits and vegetables to the US market.

In mid-February, Trump announced the imposition of “reciprocal tariffs” on countries with which the United States has a wide differential in terms of tariff levels.

Trump ordered a general tariff of 25% on Mexico and Canada starting next March 4, after a one-month pause to try to agree on greater cooperation between both countries regarding problems in the United States regarding migration, drug trafficking and national security and, if necessary, to stop the measure.
